Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
