Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals using such treatments should be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to starting mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.
"It was like a switch flipping and you become ravenous," described an individual.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is higher among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
