Sheff Wed Faces Serious Challenges, States New Football Authority

'Our role is integral to football's future' - football oversight chief the new chairman

The Championship club's current difficulties constitute a "major concern" and the football regulator is aiming to acquire authority to examine team situations in such situations, the recently named head the regulator has stated.

During an extensive discussion, the regulator, who was appointed on Monday, showed understanding towards supporters of the Owls.

The regulator engaged with four fan organizations representing the Championship side recently.

The football club have been facing challenges both on and off the pitch in 2025, with the club missing wage payments on multiple instances, including in September.

"Obviously the club has become a serious issue for football authorities and a significant problem for football," the chairman stated.

"The club represents one of the iconic names for football in England and recently we have met supporters' organizations.

"We are seeking authority... which will enable us to take Sheffield Wednesday - and other clubs submitted for our review if they require examination and acted upon."

Economic Challenges and Proprietorship Status

The team's struggling chairman Dejphon Chansiri stated during the off-season he would be prepared to relinquish control at Hillsborough, but he has been unable to finalize an agreement with prospective buyers.

Failure to pay player wages on time in earlier this year led to sanctions by the league officials in summer, blocking the team from conducting any transfers or loans for the next three transfer windows, although that restriction was lifted in August.

Authority's Position

The regulator explained: "The position was created for the fans of Sheffield Wednesday, Bury or any football club where supporters are loyal to a regional establishment that has been part of their lives in many cases.

"I fully appreciate the team's plight, as I do for all the clubs that in modern times have encountered failure, or nearly ceased operations, for factors unrelated to the supporters."

Inquired if the oversight body could require an proprietor to divest a club if they are considered unfit, the chairman responded: "Should the inquiry concern 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the answer is once we collect the information and understand the situation, we will."

But the chairman emphasized that compelling proprietors to divest clubs would be considered the final option and the regulator would prefer to work with them.

"The last thing what we want to do is begin intervening in an individual club, an individual owner, without being able to work with that owner to try and resolve the issues that the club's facing and the chairman's encountering," the chairman stated.

"In actuality, when you examine the past of the game, over the recent generations there have been certain proprietors, not many, but particular people who have shown negligence in the manner they have operated their organizations and finally don't wish to take responsibility for the coming years."

'If we get it wrong, extraordinary progress vanishes'

The chairman convened with delegates from multiple organizations to detail the scope of the oversight body this week and insisted it was a "progressive gathering" with a "high level of engagement" from the grassroots to elite level.

"The role holds considerable importance, because if we get it wrong, if the football community fails, the extraordinary progress that's been made necessary will vanish rapidly," the regulator warned.

"Such an outcome is universally undesirable in the context of the English game is a substantial accomplishment - we need to continue the progress.

"There's an enormous amount of money entering the sport and has come into football for the last 20 or 25 years, because certainty is lacking it will persist in entering the game, which is one of the reasons why I think we have to take a really clear view on challenges and obviously, of the immediate future."

Premier League Concerns

Top flight officials resisted the formation of an authority because of concerns about detrimental effects on the top-flight's competitiveness, but Kogan said: "I completely endorse the prosperity and expansion as an financial organization of the Premier League.

"Being fully aware of the worry about compromising the top flight as an elite competition of the nation. But concurrently, if you consult with top flight officials after today's meeting, they would have had a significant degree of comfort -and, actually, they have been informing us confidentially they have a considerable comfort."

Ideological Links

Kogan is still facing a "thorough examination" by the public appointments commissioner after he disclosed making donations to the political party in recent years.

The official provided financial support for Culture Secretary the politician's campaign, along with that of the current Prime Minister.

"I have fully disclosed my former ideological connection [with Labour], and that political affiliation came to an end the day the parliamentary committee confirmed my selection," Kogan said.

"I am no longer involved in any form of political activity."
