Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of play – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
